Shenandoah and Mahanoy City police were called to 309 West Coal Street for a break-in around 12:40 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, according to PSP.
The property owner told them he had seen a masked person walking inside with a large knife on the vacant home's security cameras, troopers wrote.
When officers went inside, the person was hiding under a bed upstairs, according to state police.
"As they were moving the bed, the person lunged at the officer with the knife," troopers claimed. "Police fired their service weapon striking the person."
They were pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner's Office, state police said. Their identity is being withheld pending notification of loved ones, per the release.
Troopers are investigating.
